Description of the speech

The Romanian Socialist Republic refers to the period of Romanian history in which the government was dominated by the Romanian Communist Party, founded on May 8, 1921 and overthrown at the end of December 1989 by the Romanian Revolution. The first years of communist rule in Romania were marked by repeated changes and many arrests and imprisons. In all the ministries there were Soviet “advisers”, who directly related to Moscow and held all the real decision-making powers. The whole company was pervaded by undercover agents and secret police informants. The existing prisons were filled with “political” prisoners and a new system of camps and prisons for forced labor was created, designed on the Soviet model of the Gulags invented by Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The useless project of excavation of the Danube Canal – Black Sea served as a pretext for the construction of several fields of work, where many people died. Among the most famous prison camps were Sighet, Gherla, Pitesti and Aiud; forced works were also established in the aluminum mines at the Danube Delta. The Pitesti prison was the epicenter of a particular communist “experiment” of the time.

Sighetu Marmaiei is the northern city in Romania, with fifty thousand inhabitants, with its heart rooted in churches of more denominations, the Catholic one (derived from the Hungarian presence), the reformed one, therefore Calvinist, which has seen passages of power. in the second half of the sixteenth century, a synagogue farther from the center, and of course orthodox ones. The outskirts of the city border with Ukraine, with the vast and sparsely populated trans-Carpathian region. For many years during the twentieth century, before the independence of Ukraine and the fall of communism throughout the region, this border meant the Soviets over their heads. To the west of this territory, the Maramures, the city of Satu Mare looks towards Hungary (and by air from here Budapest is closer to Bucharest). Beautiful region, the Maramures, with peasant and popular traditions still alive, wooden villages lined by roads, woods and lush rivers, agriculture still dominated by manual and animal labor.
